Best for: Remote workers with unstable video call quality
Setup Steps
1
Measure signal at your desk
Use WiFi Analyzer (Android) or Wireless Diagnostics (macOS) to measure signal strength and channel congestion at your workspace. Below -70dBm means you have a problem.
2
Move the router or add an access point
Router should be in the same room as your desk, or in line-of-sight with no more than one wall between. A mesh node is better than range extenders if the router cannot move.
3
Enable QoS and prioritise video
Most modern routers have a QoS setting. Label your work laptop MAC address as high priority. This prevents someone streaming 4K from throttling your Zoom call.
4
Use wired Ethernet if possible
A powerline adapter gives you wired speeds through existing electrical wiring. No drilling, no long cable runs. TP-Link TL-PA7010P is reliable at $60 per pair.
