Podcast Recording Setup Under 200 Dollars

Best for: Podcasters, interviewers, and voice-over artists starting from zero

1
Pick USB or XLR based on your setup
USB microphones (Audio-Technica AT2020USB+, Blue Yeti) plug directly into a laptop. XLR microphones require an audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett Solo) but give better future upgrade options.
2
Mount the microphone on a boom arm
A desk-mounted boom arm removes the stand footprint and lets you position the microphone precisely. Clamp it to the back edge of the desk — do not clamp to a glass-top desk.
3
Record in the softest room you can find
Wardrobes filled with clothes are the best free recording booths. If recording at your desk, hang a heavy blanket behind you and put a duvet on a chair next to the microphone.
4
Use Audacity or GarageBand free — do not buy DAW software yet
Both handle podcast recording and basic editing without cost. Adobe Audition and Logic Pro X are for post-production work that comes later, when you know what you need.
