Fix the light before buying a camera
A $50 key light from Elgato or Neewer will make a $200 webcam look like a $1,000 camera. Place it at 45 degrees from your face, slightly above eye level.

Get a USB condenser microphone
The Blue Yeti or Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ are the two most common first microphones. Place it 6 to 8 inches from your mouth, just below chin height, off-axis.

Use your phone as a webcam or buy an entry mirrorless
DroidCam or Continuity Camera (iOS) turns your current phone into a 1080p webcam at zero cost. If you need a dedicated camera, the Sony ZV-E10 at $550 is the step up.

Treat the room acoustics
Hang a heavy curtain behind the microphone, place a bookshelf with books to the side, and put a rug under the desk. This alone reduces echo by 60% without buying acoustic panels.
